SKIN RESEARCH SOCIETY (SINGAPORE)

SRSS training courses

DISC Assessment: 22 May 19

Career Workshop: 29 May, 13 June 19

DESCRIPTION

The Skin Research Society Singapore will be running a series of workshops aimed at Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to be held in May and June this year. The purpose of these workshops is to support ECRs in their career development to enable them to transition into the next stage of their careers.

These workshops are open only to student and postdoc members of the Skin Research Society of Singapore.  The workshop dates are as follows with further details below.

1 – Extended DISC assessment: Better understand yourself to better manage yourself.
May 22nd 9.00am to 5.00pm. Matrix Building, Biopolis

2 - Take Charge of your Career Workshop
Part 1: May 29th, 3-6pm Matrix Building, Biopolis
Part 2: June 13th, 3-6 pm Matrix Building, Biopolis

Details of the two workshops are below:

1 – Extended DISC assessment: Better understand yourself to better manage yourself.

Course Overview:
DISC is a behaviour assessment tool based on the DISC theory of psychologist William Moulton Marston. It focuses on four different personality traits which are Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). DISC Profiling is an assessment tool used to improve work communication, productivity and teamwork. It helps individuals to better understand themselves in the context of a group.
Team members and managers can benefit in several ways from taking Extended DISC assessments.  First and foremost, dealing with people is largely an art, but applying the science of DISC to interactions between people increases effectiveness and takes some of the mystery out of the process.  Regardless of your natural style, the more individuals learn about how to “read people”, understand the dynamics of the styles – such as motivating factors and natural fears, they will more quickly and easily be able to relate to and interact with colleagues.  This results in decreased conflict as people will be able to navigate individual differences to communicate more effectively.

Takeaways from the workshop:
  • Understand yourself better and help you think about future career paths
  • Improve individual performance and communication

Benefit to the ECRs in the Skin Research Society of Singapore.
DISC profiling is a highly effective method to enable better understanding of who we are and how we can better communicate with the people around us.  DISC profiling will enable ECRs to assess their strengths and weaknesses to better prepare for future leadership opportunities. This workshop will benefit SRSS ECRs in two ways. Firstly, it will enable them to enhance their communication with managers, colleagues and students. Secondly, it will help them in determining what future career paths are a good fit for them.

2 - Take Charge of your Career Workshop

Course Overview:
Career management is an essential skill for the professional in today’s world. Changes in strategy, technology and focus mean that we need to be aware of how we fit, and how we want to fit, into the workforce. This is not only important for the future, but for how we work and are engaged in our current roles. Career management, however, is not exactly taught at graduate school, and in the busyness of work it may get pushed out of our priorities until it is too late. Early Career Researchers need a way to develop their careers intentionally and not drift through a job with an unclear picture of what is next. This is a hands-on workshop taking participants through a career management framework that equips them to take charge of their careers.

There will be two, 2.5 hr sessions and practical assignments in-between to implement learnings. This workshop equips participants with the key activities and actions to manage their careers, be engaged in their roles and make career choices that are true to who they are.

Topics covered include:
● The importance of taking ownership of your career
● What you need to know to optimize career decisions
● Personal branding – Why it’s important and how to control it.
● Maximizing and discovering opportunities around you
● How to develop a network even if you are an introvert
● Goal setting and accountability

Takeaways from the workshop:
● A clearer picture of who you are, what you have to offer and how you would like to grow professionally
● Direction(s) to evaluate and towards which to steer your career
● Strategies for having career conversations
● An action plan for the next 6 months

Benefit to the ECRs in Skin Research Society of Singapore.
The majority of ECRs, students and postdocs, remain unsure what their next career move will be. Many have not seriously considered what lies after their current position and not equipped with the knowhow to effectively plan and make the transition. It can take 6 months to a year of preparation to transition out of academia and this course will help ECRs start to think about and plan for their next career step. This workshop is for early stage to senior postdoctoral fellows who want a clear plan to strengthen and develop their career options.
